BAIGU UNCLE · ORIGINAL DESIGN

Original Design

We do not add movement to wood at the end. We design each work through structure, balance, light, handwork, and repeated testing.

Movement begins with structure.

Design notes

Original design is not a surface style added at the end. What matters first is whether the structure can hold, whether the balance is stable, and whether the movement can happen naturally inside the object.

Before a work begins to move, we spend time on structure, weight, rhythm, and repeated testing. The goal is not to make motion louder, but to let it become calmer, steadier, and more appropriate for daily life.

We also care about the final tactile distance of a work. Edges, surfaces, fittings, and hand-finished details decide whether it can stay quietly on a desk, a shelf, or by the bedside, and still feel complete when someone looks at it every day.

Design premise

Design Is Not Decoration Added Later

A moving wooden work needs a reason to move. Structure, rhythm, light, and hand-finished details should be part of the design from the beginning.

Baigu Uncle does not treat motion as a surface effect. We first work through proportion, center of gravity, material choice, and testing, then use hand finishing to make the final form quieter and more natural.

From sketches to tactile adjustment, we keep asking one question: can this work stay quietly in a room, and still make someone want to look at it again?

Think through the structure first

Motion is not an expression added at the end. It should grow naturally from proportion, force, and the way parts connect.

Then decide whether it can stay in daily life

We are not looking for exaggerated motion. We care about quiet, stable movement that can be lived with over time.

Design language

Five Design Judgments

We do not separate wood, structure, motion, light, and handwork. Together, they decide whether a work can quietly stay in everyday life.

Making path

From Sketch to Moving Work

A sketch first decides the direction of movement. Parts make the structure real. Testing makes the motion stable. Hand finishing slowly brings the work from “able to move” to “ready to stay.”

This process does not happen only once. Proportion, balance, connection, and tactile feeling are checked again and again until the work can move, and also exist quietly.

01

Draw the motion first

We do not begin only with the outer shape. We first ask how it should move, where the motion should go, and whether that motion belongs to wood.

02

Make the structure work

Parts, connection points, and center of gravity decide whether the movement can happen naturally instead of staying only on paper.

03

Make the motion stable

Testing is not about making the movement more exaggerated. It is about making it lighter, slower, and steadier for long-term viewing.

04

Bring it back to touch

Final sanding, fitting, and edge finishing decide whether it feels like a complete work, not just a mechanical structure.

Motion principle

Why Motion Must Be Quiet

Motion gives a work presence, but it should not take over the room. If it moves too fast, it becomes a performance. If it demands too much attention, it interrupts the space. If it feels too deliberate, people get tired of it quickly.

03

If it can stay quietly beside you, it belongs in daily life.

Stable

The movement has to work first, before it can become beautiful.

Quiet

Only when it does not interrupt the room does it have a chance to stay.

Long-term viewing

The more restrained the motion is, the more suitable it becomes for everyday life.

Original boundary

Original Means More Than Appearance

Images can be copied, and outer forms may be imitated. But what truly matters in an original moving wooden work is how the structure works, how the motion happens, how the material is handled, and whether the final piece can stay quietly in daily life.

01

Original structure

It is not only about whether something looks similar, but whether the structure, balance, and connections truly work.

Work registration certificates

Work registration certificates are used to record creation information and rights ownership for original works.

From an Original Idea to Everyday Life

Every moving wooden work begins with structure, motion, light, and hand-finished details, then slowly becomes a small work that can stay on a desk, shelf, or bedside corner.
